Message old cams and then the new cams, and question why there was a difference w/ the lack of VTC buttons.

That is just kind of dumb on the mechanic's part. But, for the sake of avoiding something like this again, you should put a disclaimer, "JWT cams require VTC buttons, right after this part...

"Mechanical (solid) lifter camshafts require proper lash adjustment using shims and solid lifters. Z1 offers Tomei solid lifters here. These camshafts do require specially designed valve springs to handle the high lift and high RPM capability, springs are offered below as an add on option."
